The 2023 World Press Photo Contest will open on Thursday 1 December 2022 and will close on 10 January 2023. Entering the 2023 World Press Photo Contest is free and open to all professional photojournalists and/or documentary photographers.

The 2023 World Press Photo Contest recognizes and celebrates the best photojournalism and documentary photography produced over the past year.

Also this year, the regional contest model, that was launched for the 2022 Contest, will be applied. The result of the first year of this new strategy gave a much more geographically balanced view of the world, with more nuanced perspectives and a better shared understanding. This model offers both regional and global awards.

The contest is judged independently by leaders in documentary photography and photojournalism from each region. The regional and global jury will be announced in December 2022. More information on judging here.

The work of the winners will be:

  • Included in the World Press Photo annual travelling exhibition, shown around the world

  • Published on the World Press Photo website and social platforms with over 2 million followers

  • Included in the World Press Photo yearbook

Winners also receive

  • €5,000 for global winners, in addition to €1,000 for regional winners

  • An invitation to a winners’ event

  • A physical award
