Voor PHOTOTALK #3 gaat Fotodok in gesprek met Caterina Morigi (1992) over haar ontwikkeling als kunstenaar en het project Sea Bones.

Biomedische onderzoekers bestuderen de exoskeletten van zeewezens, schelpen, stekels van zee-egels, inktvissen, om de delen van menselijke botten na te maken. Hier wordt de relatie tussen mens en natuur zichtbaar doordat ogenschijnlijk verschillende elementen samen komen.

Sea Bones is een open onderzoek dat onderhevig is aan veranderingen, samengestelde beelden en 3D-sculpturen die, geleidelijk of snel, reageren op omgevingsstimuli. Sea Bones weerspiegelt de visuele ritmes tussen mens en natuur en maakt deze wezenlijke relatie zichtbaar die anders onopgemerkt blijft.

ABOUT

In her practice Caterina Morigi (Ravenna, Italy, 1991) focuses on the vital changes of matter. With installations, sculptures and images she reflects the visual rhymes identified between humankind and nature, triggering karst flows between art history, architecture and technology.

Her research often leads her to collaborate with the scientific field and to interweave other disciplines, as in Sea Bones, winning research of the 12th Edition of the Italian Council (2023); She participates at Una boccata d’arte 2024 a project by Fondazione Elpis (Milan) and Galleria Continua (San Gimignano); for Alchimie Culturali by Bevilacqua La Masa Foundation (Venice), she is working on a project that combines archaeology and contemporaneity through a political gaze.

Caterina studied Visual Arts at IUAV University of Venice and Arts Plastiques at Paris 8 – Saint Denis. She currently teaches at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence and travels for art residencies, including to the Bilbao Arte Foundation (SP).

For solo and group exhibitions she has exhibited in Italian and foreign institutions including Museo MAMbo (Bologna), Palazzo Reale (Milan), Museo Nazionale della Montagna (Turin), Art Rotterdam (NL), Villa Della Regina (Turin), Fotografia Europea (Reggio Emilia), Fondazione Archivio Casa Morra (Naples), MAR – Museo d’arte della città di Ravenna (Ravenna), Video Sound Art Festival (Milan).

The research of Sea Bones originated thanks to the meeting with Eng. Gabriela Graziani; in addition to Fotodok, the cultural partners of the project are The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art (New York), particularly collaborates with Jennifer Weiser (Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering) and (Mili Shah Professor and Chair of Mathematics) and Fondazione La Quadriennale di Roma. The project is supported by the Directorate-General for Contemporary Creativity of the Italian Ministry of Culture under the Italian Council program (2023).
