Pictorial Fields is a continuation of the previous project of Jaya Pelupessy, Manufactured Manual. The technique of using silkscreen frames remains consistent, but the works in Pictorial Fields radically zoom in on the photographic print. All works from this project are unique.
These works have become more abstract, focusing on the analysis of the photographic surface at the level of its individual dot. The series represents a shift in Pelupessy’s practice from examining what is photographed to a deeper exploration of the photograph itself. Pictorial Fields refers to both the representational qualities and limitations of photography, while also placing it within the context of abstractionism.
Festive Opening: 16 November, 16–19 hrs
CIRCULATE — PHOTOGRAPHY BEYOND FRAMES WITH WORK BY JAYA PELUPESSY
The work of Jaya Pelupessy will be on view in the exhibition Circulate – Photography Beyond Frames form 26 October until 23 March at Stedelijk museum Amsterdam. Proposals for the Museum Collection, opening this weekend at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. The 21 artists included in Circulate use photography in unique and innovative ways, thinking beyond the frame. Among the selected names is also artist Mandy Franca, a guest artist who exhibited at Galerie Caroline O’Breen this summer.
Photography has increasingly become a part of our lives; we produce and consume a constant flow of images. Also the status of photography as an art medium has shifted dramatically. The approach of the exhibited artists exceeds the technical realm; what matters is the meaning of the artwork. Carriers of the photographic image can take on myriad forms, varying from the classical photo paper to a stone or fabric, a digital form, a sculpture or a three-dimensional installation. Jaya Pelupessy will present his largest work to date, an almost 9-meter-wide installation.
The exhibition is curated by Mirelva Berghout (independent curator) and Vincent van Velsen (chairman and curator contemporary art and photography at the Stedelijk Museum). The work of selected artists attests to the impact of the image in our daily lives. Many of the works in Circulate were created especially for this museum exhibition and will be on view for the first time. During the exhibition, the Stedelijk will announce which works will be acquired for the museum collection.
