IBASHO is delighted that the wellknown Japanologist and translator Luk van Haute, will hold a talk in our gallery about his experiences on life in Japan. He will include cats a bit, but Van Haute will shed some more light on lesser known aspects of Japanese society and the stereotypical images of among others geishas, cherry blossoms, samurai and zen will be nuanced.

Van Haute’s book ‘Japan, Schetsen uit het leven’, can be purchased in our gallery and Van Haute is more than happy to sign your copy.

Van Haute lived in Japan from 1986 to 1992, where he studied Japanese literature at the University of Tokyo and was active in the film industry. Since then he has stayed there for a few weeks or months almost every year. He is a translator of the work of Haruki Murakami and many other Japanese authors, and was awarded for his anthology Love Death in Kamara and other Japanese stories. He is the author of numerous articles about Japanese society for various newspapers and magazines in the Netherlands and Flanders.

(Talk will be held in Dutch, free entrance)
